Lighting is often engineered to deliver a prescribed level of illuminance, yet illuminance alone does not necessarily correlate directly with how a space is perceived or experienced. Our visual perception is shaped by the pattern of light reflected from the surfaces around us and received by the eye — the distribution of brightness, contrast, colour, material reflectance and visual hierarchy that together shape our perception of space.
At Lighting Analysts, we place human perception at the forefront of the design process. We consider not only how much light is present, but how it is distributed throughout a space, the relationship between surface brightness, visual hierarchy and contrast, and how these elements can be layered to define the way architecture is experienced by the people within it.
